Category: Guild Wars 2 Official

Welcome to the New Guild Wars 2 Forums

We’re excited to announce that today we are launching new official forums for Guild Wars 2. The new forums will offer many terrific features, including:

  • SSO (Single Sign-on) Technology: Log in using the latest in secure systems.
  • Mobile Support: Enjoy an improved forum experience while using your mobile phone or tablet.
  • Avatars: Select from a bank of game-related images to customize your forum look.
  • Reactions: Easily share your feedback on a post or thread through the reactions system.
  • Ranks: Identify forum members who have written posts and threads of particular value to the community.
  • Badges: Increase your forum rep by getting badges based on your positive contributions, longevity, and more.
  • Search Engine: Look up a topic of interest; expand, continue, or update an existing discussion.

The existing forums will be locked later today, but our plan is to keep the current forums accessible in an archived, read-only mode until the end of October. We’ll gather your feedback about how things are functioning in a feedback thread in the Bugs Subforum.

Retaining Content

While we have ported over some of our important sticky threads, we won’t be migrating normal content from the old forum’s database into the new one. If you have created a thread—for instance, a guide, a guild recruitment notice, a continuing fan-art or fan-fiction series—please feel free to re-create that content on the new forums in the proper subcommunity/subforum. (The configuration for both forums will remain essentially the same.) If you think another forum member should move content that they have written over to the new forum, please post in their thread to encourage them to do so.

How to Log In

Our new forums will use SSO (single sign-on) technology, so logging in will be simple yet secure. Join anytime by logging in through your game account’s username (your email address) and password. Your display name in the forums will match your display name in the game. For security reasons, we won’t store your password on the forums themselves, just your display name. Once you have logged in, you can visit your personal profile page to customize your account, and then start checking out the features and functionality of the new forums.

About Accounts

The forums will be visible to everyone, members and visitors alike. Everyone with a paid Guild Wars 2 account in good standing can participate on the new forums. A game account holder whose forum privileges were terminated on the old forums will be granted one-time amnesty in order to rejoin the forum community. Members who join the new forums under amnesty should be aware that they are subject to permanent revocation of their forum privileges upon breach of the User Agreement or Forum Code of Conduct on the new forums. Play-for-free players will be able to log in to bookmark posts.

We want to hear from you! If you have any feedback, questions, or suggestions about the new forums, please feel free to post in the forum feedback thread. Once again, welcome to the new Guild Wars 2 Official Forums!

Grenth’s Regalia Outfit is Available in the Gem Store!

I’m taking a little investment risk. Since it turns out that humans don’t know their gods as well as they thought they did, I figure there’s a fifty percent chance another one will start causing trouble. And that means every local fanatic will want merchandise. I’m not putting all my money on Grenth, but I think it’s a solid prediction. After all, there’s one thing you can always count on to follow war.

  • Grenth’s Regalia Outfit

Perfect for all your seasonal crypt lurkings, grave diggings, and blood rituals. Hey—I dare you to wear this into the Ascalon Catacombs. If you can get five ghosts to follow you, I’ll buy you a drink.

  • A Tiny Change

I’m swapping out some minis and gliders this week, so make sure to pick up your favorites before you head off to parts unknown. And don’t make that face—it’s not like you’ll never see them again.

  • Available Now in the Gem Store!

ArenaNet Launches New Forums!

Last Post: Sep 12, 2017 16:27

Today we’re opening new official Guild Wars 2 forums! You can read all about our new forums in today’s blog post and you can access them here.

The forums you are viewing here will be locked for posting later today, September 12, 2017, and we plan to retain them in read-only mode through October of 2017. Our new forums will offer a fresh start and will provide a great setting for all the conversations that are sure to come with the launch of Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire and Living World Season 4.

We have created a few essential administrative or introductory threads for the new forums. You’ll also find useful announcement (“sticky”) threads, such as those that gather bug reports or player input or that host player screenshots. You’re welcome to recreate a thread that you first posted here on the new forums, or ask a forum member to do so with a thread that they started.

You may want to pay special attention to our guide to the new forums, a thread that contains tips for getting familiar with the system. You are invited to share your input about the new forums in a feedback thread created expressly for that purpose.

We hope you will join us on the new forums, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Geomancer Glider and Taimi and Rox’s Packages Now Available!

Somebody once told me the world would chew me up and spit me out. She never recognized my intelligence—but her condescension and arrogance made a fool of her. I hit the ground running after that, and as the years go by I’m more convinced than ever that I was right to go my own way.

Listen—it doesn’t make sense not to live for yourself. Maybe you’ve honed your common sense, but it can dull your edge if you’re not careful. You’ve got a lot to do, so who cares if you’re navigating the back roads for now? You’ll never reach the top if you don’t start somewhere.

Go do your thing, and make sure they pay you for it. You’ve got to be like a shooting star—shake up the status quo.

  • Geomancer Glider

Are you tired of plummeting to the ground in flames? Well, I can’t help you with that—but I can offer you this giant boulder to ride on the way down. Take control of your trajectory.

  • Taimi’s Package and Rox’s Package

Whether you’re out on the road or spending time in the lab, I’ve got you covered. Rox’s Package comes with Rox’s Pathfinder Outfit, Rox’s Short Bow Skin, Rox’s Quiver Set, and two Communal Boost Bonfires. Taimi’s Package includes Taimi’s Outfit, Mini Scruffy, Scruffy Backpack, and your choice of an Immortal weapon skin.

  • Fall Cleaning

I’m swapping out some armor pieces this week, so keep an eye on the store to see what’s coming and going.

Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire—Road to the Desert

Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire™ returns players to the Elonian desert region, the setting for the Guild Wars: Nightfall® campaign. An ancient land of magic and majesty, the desert is where giant sand wurms roamed and humans once strived for the right to commune directly with their gods.

But things have changed in the past 250 years, and the region once associated with the Land of the Golden Sun has grown much, much darker. The Elonian Desert is currently ruled by a tyrannical undead lich named Palawa Joko and beset by both the Elder Dragon Kralkatorrik and the rogue god Balthazar. The growing threat of a clash between god and Elder Dragon doesn’t just threaten the desert, its people, and the rich cultural tapestry they’ve woven—it threatens the magical balance that holds Tyria itself together.

In its thousand-year-plus history, the Elonian Desert has been the site of some literally world-shaping events. As Guild Wars 2 returns to the desert, it’s important to remember how vital the desert region is, how glorious and terrible its history, and how it factors into the ebb, flow, and evolution of magic.

786 BE: The Gods Arrive, and They Brought Friends

The Six Gods first appear in Cantha, bringing humanity with them. Like gardeners starting a new patch, they transplant human beings to this lush new world, working the soil and tending their seedbeds to ensure the new crop will take root, spread, and thrive.

205 BE: Into the Desert

After centuries spent settling Cantha, and then Orr, humanity expands into Elona. Despite the desert’s harsh climate and a host of both magical and natural dangers, humans establish a foothold in this magically robust environment that will become one of the most durable societies in history.

200 BE: Royal Roots

The royal line of Primeval Kings begins its 250-year reign over the desert region. During that reign, one of their best and brightest, Queen Nadijeh, founds the Order of the Sunspears—a heroic militia that uses magical and military might to protect the innocent and oppose any who would harm the new nation. Over the coming centuries, the Sunspears will selflessly serve their rulers and the people, and they will come to command almost religious awe and respect from the people of the desert.

Year 0 BE: The New Age Begins With a Bang

Abaddon declares war against his fellow gods over the issue of humanity’s magic use. The other five gods band together to defeat him and imprison him in the Realm of Torment, but their victory is a costly one: the fury of this divine clash obliterates the Crystal Sea, transforming it into the wasteland known today as the Crystal Desert. Once Abaddon is imprisoned, the Forgotten—a mysterious race of advanced snakefolk who have allied with the gods—serve as Abaddon’s jailers to prevent him from doing any more damage.

452 AE: There’s a Nasty Bug Going Around

The scarab plague—a terrifying disease that horrifically kills its victims—spreads across the region. The Primeval monarchs at this time—twin sisters Nahlah and Dahlah—are woefully unprepared for the pandemic and fail to stop it from devastating their kingdom. Though the plague subsides in 456 AE, the suffering it causes ends the Primeval Dynasty, kicking off nearly 200 years of civil war, pretender kings, and lawlessness.

640 AE: Regrouped, Restored, and Ready to Move Forward

After enduring two centuries of lesser kings and brutal warlords, the independent states of Kourna, Istan, and Vabbi join forces to form a new nation: Elona, named for the great Elon River that flows through their shared kingdom. This alliance stabilizes the region politically and martially, allowing Elona to heal and finally begin to restore and reclaim its former glory.

757 AE: A New Threat Rises That Just Won’t Die

Undead lich Palawa Joko emerges, intent on ruling Elona through magic, fear, and an army of mummies. He builds his Bone Palace, from which he will launch attacks against his neighbors as he conducts his war of conquest. By 860 AE, Joko has taken control of Vabbi, earning him the nickname “Scourge of Vabbi.”

862 AE: A Duel for the Ages

Elona joins together to resist Joko’s advance. The war culminates in the Battle of Jahai, where Joko and the Elonian hero Turai Ossa square off in single combat, with the combined forces of both sides bearing witness. Ossa prevails, but Joko is not so easily dispatched—how do you kill a threat that is already dead? Ossa’s answer: bury it under a rock so big it’ll never dig its way out.

1075 AE: Night Falls Over Elona

The events of Guild Wars: Nightfall take place. After centuries of preparation and manipulation from within his hellish prison, Abaddon makes his move, determined to break out and establish dominion over humanity and the world it inhabits. To stop Abaddon, players are forced into a devil’s bargain with Palawa Joko, the only one who knows how to safely traverse the most dangerous part of the Crystal Desert and take the fight to Abaddon. The cost of this information is Joko’s release from beneath his mountainous tomb.

After a titanic struggle, Abaddon is defeated and his power absorbed by Kormir, a Sunspear Spearmarshal. Kormir ascends to godhood and replaces Abaddon as one of the Six Gods, becoming the more benevolent Goddess of Truth.

1175 The Scourge Returns to Scourge Again

Free, and having had three centuries to reconsider his strategy, Joko begins a new campaign of conquest. He forgoes brute force in favor of diabolical subtlety, and he diverts the Elon River’s life-giving water away from Vabbi and the other Elonian states. Deprived of this essential resource, Vabbi soon has no choice but to surrender. Kourna and Istan follow suit, becoming vassal states in King Joko’s desert empire. Joko moves to consolidate his hold on the region and to root out his enemies without interference from the rest of the world by closing the region’s borders and turning his considerable influence and power inward, on his own subjects and his own territory. He kills or converts the Sunspears, along with anyone else who dares oppose his rule, until there is no one left with the strength to defy him.

1320 AE: An Elder Dragon Moves In

Kralkatorrik, the Crystal Elder Dragon, wakes from its slumber and heads directly for the desert region, leaving a corrupted swath of Branded landscape and creatures in its wake. Kralkatorrik is determined to kill its rebellious champion Glint, but when it reaches her it finds the guild of heroes known as Destiny’s Edge waiting. Destiny’s Edge comes very close to stopping Kralkatorrik, but their effort ultimately fails. Kralkatorrik kills Glint, along with her Forgotten attendants, and Snaff, a founding member of Destiny’s Edge. This defeat leads the guild to disband, and Kralkatorrik goes unchallenged as it settles into the desert region and prepares to consume as much of the world’s magic as it can.

1328 AE: One Dragon’s Loss Is Another Dragon’s Gain

Heroes kill the Jungle Elder Dragon Mordremoth in the distant Maguuma Jungle. After absorbing a portion of the magic released by Mordremoth’s demise, Kralkatorrik rises from its lair in the Crystal Desert and heads south, toward the more populated areas of the Elonian region.

1329 AE: Lighting the Fuse

Balthazar, the god of fire and war, returns to Tyria to kill an Elder Dragon and claim its power, despite knowing that doing so will plunge the world’s magic into permanent chaos. He acquires enough power to accomplish this daunting task, but players thwart his attempts to destroy Primordus and Jormag. With only one viable target left, Balthazar sets his sights on Kralkatorrik in the desert.

Which brings us to the present day: Kralkatorrik is at the peak of its power, Balthazar is obsessed with claiming that power for himself, and they’re headed for a showdown in Joko’s desert kingdom. The potential clash between these three formidable forces threatens not only the Elonian Desert but the entire world.

Even with your help, can the desert region and its people survive? Or will over a thousand years of culture and history disappear like grains of sand in the wind? Only time, and Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire, will tell.

Developer Diary: Joy of Movement on Mounts

Hey! I’m Roy Cronacher, and along with the mounts team, I’m here to tell you more about one of the new features in Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire™. Watch the developer diary video above and read on for more in-depth information.

The spark that led us to create mounts came from a deep analysis of Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns™ to find out what worked well. Gliding stood out as a huge hit that gave players incredible freedom to move in new ways and explore. We wanted to create even more ways to explore Tyria, and mounts were the perfect vessel for this.

We weren’t satisfied with making mounts a simple cosmetic speed boost that’d be tacked on to your character, so we set out to build a visceral, organic experience that feels like you’re riding a real animal. You’ll train them through the Mastery system to push their amazing abilities to new heights.

Joy of Movement

You’ve probably heard this term before when we’ve mentioned other features or mechanics in Guild Wars 2. We took the concept to heart, made it a core pillar of mounts, and went wild bringing that feeling to life.

Developing the mounts’ movement physics and animation sets early in the process helped us ensure that they move naturally. We created different movement physics for each mount to emphasize their anatomy and make them move realistically in the world. For example, the skimmer never touches the ground, so it has lower friction and slides a bit, much like a drift car. We also created custom cameras to support the feeling of fast, unique movements for each mount.

Perform Incredible Feats

We wanted mounts to feel like toys that are enjoyable to use, and tools to explore the world in new, fantastic ways. Just as gliding filled a role that didn’t exist before, mounts are capable of impressive moves that your character can’t perform on their own. Each movement ability shines when tackling a different type of terrain or obstacle.

Here’s a high-level overview of each mount’s movement ability:

  • The vicious raptor leaps swiftly across great distances, making them useful for crossing large canyons. By holding down the hotkey, a leap will continue to its maximum distance. You can also release the hotkey early to drop out of the leap, which consumes less endurance.
  • The cute springer has an unrivaled ability to jump straight up into the sky. You can use it to jump over cliffs, walls, and other hard-to-reach locations. Hold down the hotkey to charge the jump; the longer you charge, the farther up you’ll go.
  • The floating skimmer hovers over water, terrain, and small obstacles. Its movement ability lifts it significantly higher, so it can cross dangerous areas, reach ledges, and avoid attacks. You can hold down the hotkey to remain in the lifted state as long as you have sufficient endurance.
  • The mysterious jackal is made of sand and can store up to three charges of a quick movement-speed blink, which dissipates its body and allows it to reappear a short distance ahead. It can also use special sand portals throughout the desert. You’ll maintain your momentum as you blink through the portals, creating interesting combinations for puzzles in the Crystal Desert.

It’s All about the Mounts

During testing, we found that manually dismounting to attack foes felt clunky and bad. We developed engage skills—offensive skills that allow your mounts to engage in battle—for an awesome, smooth transition between riding and combat. You can ride straight up to enemies and use these skills to damage them, setting you up for battle, or you can aid allies as you dismount.

Your mounts each have their own stats and health bar, which allows us to play up their different strengths and to balance engage skills without the need to take character stats or gear into account. If your mount’s health reaches zero, you’ll be forcibly dismounted, but your character will be at full health.

Upgrading Your Mounts

We felt that gliding Masteries were a good example of meaningful upgrades that progressed alongside you as you played—you unlocked something awesome and then made it even more awesome. In Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire, you’ll gain access to a Mastery line for each mount you unlock. These lines are filled with improvements to the engage skills and movement abilities, along with some other goodies. When you unlock the final Mastery tier for a single mount, the first Mastery unlock is then shared across all mounts. That way, you’re earning progress for your favorite mount as you max out the other mount lines.

Like all Masteries, the mount system is account wide and will carry over to your other characters. You can use them in most areas of the Crystal Desert. This opens up a completely new experience for leveling new characters, since you’ll have access to your mounts from the get-go as you explore Tyria.

We’re really excited for you to collect all the mounts, try them out, and master their movement abilities. Happy exploring!

Swaggering Hat and Marjory and Kasmeer’s Packages are Available Now!

Everybody goes through a rough patch now and again. Whoever said “Love means never having to say you’re sorry” has never been in love. To love recklessly is better than to never love at all. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Look, I’m not a relationship counselor. Platitudes are five gold apiece.

And no, I’m not bitter and lonely. Scram.

  • Kasmeer’s Package and Marjory’s Package

Rekindle the flame with some complementary contrast. Kasmeer’s Package includes Kasmeer’s Regal Outfit, Kasmeer’s Staff Skin, a Phoenix Glider, 5 Bloodstone Dye Kits, and a Total Makeover Kit. Marjory’s Package contains Marjory’s Shrouded Outfit, Marjory’s Axe Skin, and Marjory’s Dagger Skin, as well as a Total Makeover Kit and 5 Teleport to Friend tokens—so you and your significant bother can stick together.

  • Swaggering Hat

This stylish hat makes a statement wherever you go—and that statement is, “Get out of the way of my hat.” It even comes complete with a fetching hairstyle. Don’t you look fancy?

  • Seasonal Swapping

I’m clearing floor space to get ready for autumn, so peruse my inventory and see what’s going into storage soon.

You kept coming back through the rise of Elder Dragons, the razing of this city, and now you’re here in spite of whatever’s crawled into the human god of war’s furnace. That’s what I call loyalty.

  • Season 1 Memory Box—Scarlet vs. Lion’s Arch

I didn’t come out of the wreckage of Lion’s Arch entirely empty handed. Is it still too soon to sell memorabilia? Here, take a box for free—just keep this conversation between us.

  • Champion of Tyria Outfit

Whether you’re slaying dragons or…doing whatever you do with them now, you can’t go wrong wearing this dignified ensemble.

  • Mini Squire Aurene

You wouldn’t take your best buddy out into the wide, cold world without her own set of armor, would you? Sure, she was basically born armored. But isn’t her tiny helmet just precious?

  • Sheet Music Glider

Make sweet, sweet music wherever you go, as long as “wherever” is below you. Available as part of the Champion of Tyria Package, which also includes a Champion of Tyria Outfit, Mini Squire Aurene, Total Makeover Kit, and Exuberant Dye Kit.
